John Lawless

The people behind the events.

I am a Bradford-based author, screenwriter and independent researcher. My work explores crime, injustice, resilience and human connection, often through stories inspired by real historical events and people.

Research underpins the writing. Archival material, public records and historical accounts provide a starting point for exploring the lives behind the events: what people fear, whom they love and how they act under pressure.

Alongside the novels, I develop screen adaptations for potential film and television projects. These offer a different way to tell the stories through performance, dialogue, silence and visual detail.

Writing for the page and screen

The novels and screen projects share an interest in character, responsibility and the lives shaped by larger events. Explore them separately, or follow the connections between a novel and its adaptation.
